I paint the places that stay with you. Not as perfect records, but as fragments of atmosphere: a blue doorway, the heat on old stone, the shimmer where sky meets sea.

Behind the paintings

Painted from a life
spent looking.

I’m John Crosland, a watercolour artist and traveller. I studied at Central School of Art and Design, and have always been drawn to the character of places: weathered walls, strong sunlight, old architecture and the small details that give somewhere its soul.

Dividing my time between Cambridge and Cyprus keeps me close to two very different kinds of landscape. The Watercolour Atlas is my way of bringing those journeys together, one painting at a time.

“I’m not trying to describe every brick. I’m trying to keep hold of how the place felt.”
